Mahopac's Wilson has made vast impact on diamond

Mahopac senior shortstop Camdyn Wilson has been a steady, indispensable presence for the Wolf Pac – whether she’s suited up in Mahopac blue and gold or representing the Empire State Huskies in summer travel ball. Any successful softball team needs a reliable force up the middle and in the heart of its lineup, and Wilson has been exactly that for the past five seasons.

Long and lean, Wilson looks every bit the prototypical shortstop. She’s surpassed 100 career hits, built an impressive varsity résumé and routinely delivers highlight-worthy plays in the field. Her consistency, leadership and athleticism have made her one of Mahopac’s most trusted players.

This June, Wilson will graduate with a 4.0 GPA and continue both her academic and athletic career at Hofstra University, where she plans to study health science. She made an impression on and off the field, according to Mahopac assistant principal Christina Giasante.

“Cam is the total package,” said Giasante, the former Wolf Pac coach who brought Wilson up to varsity as an eighth-grader a year after delivering a sectional title in 2021. “She’s an outstanding student – in the top of her class – and a standout athlete. She is a leader on and off the field, and Hofstra is getting a dedicated, committed and accountable player who will give her best every time she steps on the field. Cam is resilient, driven and truly one of my favorite kids to coach by far. She is the kind of student athlete every coach dreams of having and an administrator loves to brag about.”

Before her departure, though, Wilson is hoping to get the Wolf Pac back to sure-fire relevance this spring, which she had already done by leading the team to a 12-8 regular season with the Section 1 Class AA tournament on tap this week when Mahopac entered as a potential No. 8 seed against No. 9 Saunders (the official seeds were set to be released on May 19).

“Cam is one of the most humble athletes you will ever meet,” Seger said. “She truly lets her game speak for itself – and it speaks volumes. It’s a privilege to watch her play: her leadership, focus and ability to make ESPN-worthy plays look effortless never fails to amaze us all.”

It’s one thing to go about one’s business in casual fashion, but there’s nothing ‘caz’ about Wilson.

“What stands out most about Cam is her passion for the game and the work ethic that matches it,” Seger said. “Her love for softball shows up in every rep, every practice and every inning. She’s the kind of player who leads by example – putting in the extra work when no one’s watching, always striving to get better and lifting up the people around her in the process. Her success today is the result of years of dedication, discipline and genuine joy for the sport.”

Since earning a spot on the varsity team as an eighth-grader, Wilson has been an irreplaceable part of the Wolf Pac program.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that she’ll continue to do great things at Hofstra and beyond,” Seger said. “She’s left a lasting impact on Mahopac softball, and we can’t wait to see all the incredible things she’ll accomplish in life.”

We caught up with Camdyn near the end of the softball season.

What’s been the most challenging part of high school for you? Balancing school and practices for both high school and travel teams. Also, still trying to be social, knowing that I won’t be in high school forever.

What’s your favorite memory thus far of your time at Mahopac High? My favorite memory was my first varsity game in eighth grade against Ursuline when I went 4-for-4.

It’s been a while since Mahopac won the sectional title with Shannon Becker in the circle. Did that have any impact on you as a young rookie coming up? Yes, I missed Shannon Becker by a year, so being in eighth grade after they won the section made me want to step into a big role from the start. All the girls wanted to try and win another section title and I tried to do my part toward that goal.

What did being named a team captain mean to you? For me, it meant that I was given a chance to be a role model for the younger girls on our team. We have a very young team and it has been rewarding to be put into a position for them to look up to me not only for softball but for other things too.

What do you see yourself accomplishing in five to 10 years? I hope to graduate from Hofstra with a degree in health science while hopefully doing well in softball. After that, I plan on going to PA school.

Is there any particular teacher or administrator during your time in Mahopac Schools who has made a difference in your life? Ms. Giasante has had a major impact on me. She gave me a spot on the team in eighth grade and pushed me to be a better player while still holding me accountable for my mistakes. She’s had a big impact on my success.
