BREWSTER, N.Y.—The Brewster Cares warming center, which organizers call the only one of its kind in Putnam County, has opened in a new Brewster location for the winter of 2024-25 and is seeking volunteers.

The Brewster Cares Shelter is open from December to March and works in partnership with St. Lawrence O'Toole and Trinity Lutheran churches to provide shelter for Putnam County's unhoused population.

“Brewster Cares is the last line of defense against homelessness in Putnam County during the cold winter months,” organizers said. "Our staff and network of volunteers help us to provide hot meals, a safe place to sleep, a place to bathe and launder clothes, and a communal atmosphere for those who do not have shelter for the winter.

“We work with Social Services to find permanent housing solutions and provide services for our guests, as well as help them apply for jobs and connect with local employers.”

Brewster Cares is urging anyone without housing between December and March to reach out by calling 845-279-6146 or visiting the organizers at 577 North Main Street in Brewster, inside the Sports Complex, at 8:30 pm.. A Daytime Warming Center is also open at the same location from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. To volunteer, or learn more, visit brewstercaresny.org.

Brewster Cares is a non-profit organization dedicated to the care of those in need in Brewster and the immediate surrounding communities. Its mission is to support, serve, and encourage those less fortunate or in need of assistance.
