It wasn't us! Mahopac News considers legal action after faked Facebook article

Posted

MAHOPAC, N.Y.—A Facebook post in the group Mahopac Politics What’s Happening purporting to show a 2015 Mahopac News article is fake. The 'article' was brought to our attention on Sunday morning, July 13, and claims to be by former editor and current editor-at-large Bob Dumas. It is not.  The post appeared to have been taken down later on Sunday morning.

The post, by an anonymous user, included an image that is designed to look like a printed article; however, it contains several obvious errors.  Note that our last edition was July 3, 2025.

“Other visual clues will be apparent to anyone who regularly reads Mahopac News,” said Brett Freeman, CEO and publisher of Mahopac News’ parent company, Halston Media. “We are exploring legal options. Someone fabricated a story and used our name to give it false credibility.”

This is a developing story.

Correction: This article previously stated that July 2, 2015, was a Tuesday; it was, in fact, a Thursday.
