A quick fix and a safer neighborhood — thanks to Carmel’s Highway Department

Posted

Dear Editor,

One crisp morning in Carmel, my family and I strolled through the neighborhood, kids skipping ahead, chasing squirrels. Between two houses, I spotted a crumbling concrete structure, rusted rebar jutting out like a trap. It sat just 10 feet from the road, a decades-old hazard waiting for trouble. I had passed countless people strolling during my walk.

As my kids edged closer, a neighbor called from his porch, "Watch out!" He told me he'd reported it years ago but nothing ever happened.  While still on the walk, I contacted the Carmel Highway Department. Superintendent Mike Stern answered promptly, noting it might not be town property but promising to investigate. The next day, he confirmed they'd replace it. Two days later, the hazard was gone, swapped for a safe, new cleanout.

This is Carmel's new rhythm. Roads are improving, safety concerns tackled swiftly. Mike Stern, our "get 'er done" superintendent, shows how quick action strengthens and improves the safety of our community.
