WESTCHESTER, NY. - Cleanup and power restoration efforts continued Sunday across Northern Westchester after a severe thunderstorm packing wind gusts of up to 80 mph swept through the area shortly after 8 p.m. on July 4.
The storm toppled trees, snapped utility poles and brought down power lines, leaving thousands without electricity. NYSEG said crews had restored power to about 6,000 customers in its Brewster Division, which serves parts of Dutchess, Putnam and Westchester counties, but warned that restoration efforts would continue for several days.
Lewisboro
Town Supervisor Tony Gonçalves said Lewisboro was among the hardest-hit communities in NYSEG's Brewster Division, along with Beekman, Patterson, Southeast and Yorktown. At the peak of the storm, the division had about 25,000 outages, with 234 downed power lines and 31 broken utility poles. By Sunday afternoon, outages had been reduced to about 15,000. Restoration efforts are expected to continue through at least Sunday and could extend into Tuesday. The Golden's Bridge Fire Department also urged residents to stay away from downed power lines, warning that the surrounding ground could be energized. Between Saturday evening and late Sunday morning, firefighters responded to nearly 20 storm-related calls, most involving downed wires, transformers and fallen tree limbs.
Bedford
Town officials reported that several roads remained closed Sunday because of extensive damage to utility poles and power lines. Hampton Road in Katonah remained blocked by a large tree, while Route 172, Greenwich Road, Chestnut Ridge Road and Wood Road were also closed. Officials said NYSEG and Con Edison had brought in additional crews and would continue working around the clock, but warned residents to expect a multi-day outage. Residents were reminded to stay away from downed power lines and trees entangled with electrical wires.
Somers
Supervisor Robert Scorrano said NYSEG had brought in additional crews from outside the region to speed restoration efforts and was providing municipal officials with updated restoration timelines. He praised the town's Highway Department, Fire Department and emergency personnel for working through the night to clear roads and respond to numerous storm-related incidents. NYSEG crews remained in Somers on Sunday restoring power to neighborhoods still without electricity.
North Salem
As of 3 p.m. Sunday, about 149 customers remained without power. Supervisor Warren Lucas said NYSEG expected restoration to continue through Sunday and possibly into Tuesday as crews repaired approximately 30 broken utility poles. Additional line crews were en route, although holiday weekend traffic slowed their arrival. To assist residents, the town arranged for dry ice distribution and a water truck at the North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps headquarters on Daniel Road, which also opened its facilities for residents needing showers from 5 to 9 p.m.
Yorktown
Officials are organizing a dry ice distribution at 6:30 p.m on Sundy, July 5, at the shopping center on Downing Street. The effort is being spearheaded by Highway Superintendent Dave Paganelli and Deputy Supervisor Sergio Esposito, with the assistance of the Yorktown Police Department. In a social media post at 4:30 p.m., Yorktown Supervisor Ed Lachterman urged the community to be safe and expressed optimism that any remaining power outages would be restored by Monday, July 6.
