SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. - On the morning of Sunday, Sept. 7, the community gathered at the Vista Fire Department's 9/11 Monument for the annual memorial service honoring the lives lost on September 11, 2001.
The solemn ceremony paid tribute to the nearly 3,000 innocent victims, including the 343 FDNY firefighters, 23 NYPD officers, and 37 Port Authority police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The department also recognized the many first responders who continue to battle 9/11-related illnesses, as well as those who have passed away in the years since.
Firefighters, families, neighbors, and local leaders joined together to reflect, lay a wreath at the monument, and observe a moment of silence. The service not only remembered the heartbreak of that day but also honored the courage, unity, and resilience that emerged in its aftermath.
This year, the Vista Fire Department welcomed retired FDNY Lieutenant Dave Russell as keynote speaker. Russell shared his reflections on September 11 and the impact it continues to have on first responders and their families.
“We are deeply grateful to everyone who attended and stood with us in honoring the memory of those we lost,” the Vista Fire Department said in a statement. “We will never forget.”
