VISTA, N.Y. - A firefighter was injured as multiple companies responded to a residential blaze on Elmwood Road in Vista on Monday evening, according to the Vista Fire Department.
On Monday, June 22, at approximately 8 p.m., the VFD and South Salem Fire Department were dispatched to a residence after a report of smoke coming from a house.
Upon arrival, Vista Fire Chief Jeff Peck observed smoke pushing from the roof and transmitted a first alarm assignment. During a 360-degree size-up of the structure, firefighters identified active fire at the rear of the home, including the “C side” and C/D corner.
Crews from Vista and South Salem quickly deployed three 1¾-inch hoselines and began aggressive fire attack operations, successfully working to knock down the main body of fire. Due to the size and complexity of the incident, additional mutual aid departments were requested to the scene and to provide station coverage.
During interior operations, a mayday was transmitted after a firefighter fell from the first floor into the basement. The firefighter was visible from the exterior, and crews from both Vista and South Salem immediately coordinated a rapid rescue to remove the injured firefighter. The firefighter was evaluated by EMS at the scene, transported to a local hospital, and later released.
No residents were home at the time of the fire. The blaze was discovered and reported by a passing motorist.
The Westchester County Cause and Origin Team responded to investigate the origin of the fire. Officials confirmed the incident has been reviewed, and no further cause and origin details are being released at this time.
Vista Command was terminated shortly after midnight on Tuesday morning.
The Vista Volunteer Fire Department expressed gratitude to all assisting agencies, including Pound Ridge Fire Department, Golden’s Bridge Fire Department, Ridgefield Fire Department, Bedford Hills Fire Department, New Canaan Fire Department, Wilton Fire Department, Croton Falls Fire Department, Georgetown Fire Department, Mount Kisco Fire Department, the Lewisboro Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Lewisboro Police Department, Westchester EMS Paramedics, Battalion 13 Chief Jason Blauvelt, 60 Control / Westchester County Department of Emergency Services, Westchester County Cause & Origin Zone 5, the Town of Lewisboro Building Department, and New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG).
