KATONAH, N.Y. - With postseason action set to tip off, the Harvey School's basketball squads are looking to make an impact.

Boys Look to Repeat

Harvey’s boys varsity basketball team begins its quest Wednesday, Feb. 25 to repeat as champions of both the Housatonic Valley Athletic League (HVAL) and the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class C Division. Harvey, edging out Watkinson for the No.1 seed in the HVAL playoffs, will host a semifinal game Wednesday in the Fenstermacher Athletic Center. The Cavs must await the winner of Monday’s quarterfinal between No. 4 Christian Heritage and No. 5 Wooster before they know who they’ll face in the semifinal. Watkinson, also with a first-round bye as the No.2 seed, will do the same. The Rams' semifinal matchup will be against either No.3 Williams or No.6 Forman.

The Cavaliers enter the playoffs with a 9-1 record, their only loss coming against Watkinson who finished at 8-1, after their final league game against Forman Friday, Feb. 20 was canceled. Watkinson’s only league loss was to Harvey, whose overall regular season record is 13-5.

Harvey wrapped up the regular season last Friday, with a 93-51 loss to Greens Farms Academy, in a nonleague game that had no bearing on the HVAL standings. Senior captain Cam Spruils led Harvey’s offense with 25 points. Sophomore Gavin Botoff scored in double digits with 12.

If the Cavs win their semifinal Wednesday, they will play for the HVAL championship Saturday, Feb. 28 on their home court. The NEPSAC Class C championship tournament is scheduled to start. Wednesday, March 4 at a start time not yet announced.

Girls Begin Championship Push

Harvey’s girls basketball team looks to go deep into the HVAL playoffs that start this week as the Cavaliers have their eyes on the top prize, the league championship trophy. It all begins Tuesday, Feb. 24 when, weather permitting, the No.2 seed Harvey girls will host No. 7 Wooster in a championship tournament quarterfinal in the friendly confines of the Fenstermacher Athletic Center.

Harvey enters the playoff run with an 8-3 record against HVAL rivals and 13-5 overall. The top seed King School at 11-0 in league games hosts the No.8 seed Forman who finished the season 0-12. Wooster finished the season at 2-10.

The Cavs ended their regular season schedule Friday, Feb. 20 with a 51-37 loss to Masters of Dobbs Ferry in a fast-paced nonleague game that came after a 10-day layoff from competition for Harvey.

“It was a lot faster tempo and speed than we have been playing the past couple of weeks,” Harvey coach Hannah Paul said. “Moving at a faster pace is not what we’re used to,” the coach said. “We had some trouble getting looks at the basket and taking good shots and trouble taking care of the ball,” said the coach who found a silver lining in  the loss. “It was good to play a fast- paced, stronger team to prepare for our league playoffs.”

Senior captain Peyton Forde led the team in scoring with 19 points. Senior Casey Kelly of South Salem and ninth grader Mahlea Mpamugo scored four points each. Juniors Lainey Hanson of Yorktown Heights and Sydney Boothe each put in three, and seniors Skye Watson and Amani Carty added two points each.

With the regular season now in the rearview mirror, the Harvey girls can turn their full attention to what’s in front of them. If the Cavs win Tuesday, they’ll advance to the semifinal round Wednesday and play host once again.

Tuesday’s quarterfinal tip-off time has not yet been announced.
