Richard J. Sweeney was born in New York City, raised in Convent Station, New Jersey and a long-time resident of the Upper Eastside. He died on August 24, 2026 at the age of 79 surrounded by his wife Patricia, daughter Katie, son-in-law Jack and granddaughters Slater, Margaretta and Annie Lyden.
Richard was a graduate of Notre Dame and New York University and served with the United States Navy in Vietnam. Returning from service, he started a long career in corporate banking with Manufactures Hanover Trust and several other multinational banking organizations always trying to bring leadership, passion and imagination to challenging situations.
He was a member of the Metropolitan Museum, Central Park Conservancy, and the New York Athletic Club where he was active as Commander of the American Legion and several committees.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 10, 2026 at 10:00am at St. Jean Baptiste Church, 184 East 76th Street, New York, NY 10021.
