CARMEL, N.Y. - Calling all Cupids!

Our military men and women could use a little extra love this coming Valentine’s Day, said Jim Rathschmidt of United for the Troops.

The Carmel-based nonprofit is collecting donations of snacks, toiletries, and sundries – not to mention cards – to send off to deployed troops as part of its annual campaign, Operation Cupid.

It also puts together care packages on other holidays.

Especially needed now are jelly and jam, tea, individual boxes of cereal, coffee, instant hot chocolate, and canned fruit, Rathschmidt said.

No glass containers or aerosol items, please. Food should be in single-size portions or containers no larger than 16 ounces.

Donations need to be received by Thursday, Jan. 16. The main drop-off point is 34 Gleneida Ave., Carmel, N.Y.

Rathschmidt said office staff aren’t there all the time, but there are collection bins available.

For additional drop-off locations or more information, text or call (845) 729-4239.

Donations can also be sent to Jim Rathschmidt, United for the Troops, 16 Boniello Drive, Mahopac, N.Y. , 10541. The organization’s email address is unitedforthetroops@gmail.com.

The complete wish list is available on the organization’s website, www.unitedforthetroops.org.

Toiletries include foot powder, hand sanitizer, baby wipes, chapstick, eye drops, nail clippers and files, dental floss, disposable razor, shampoo, deodorant, and feminine hygiene products.

Sundries to send include batteries, crew socks, band-aids, hand warmers, individual-sized laundry detergent, books, word games, and playing cards.

Also going in the Valentine's Day care packages are snacks such as Pringles, trail mix, pop tarts, granola bars, cookies, crackers, nuts, beef jerky, instant oatmeal (single serve), canned tuna or chicken, popcorn (microwavable bags), gum, lifesavers, canned soup, and candy.
