SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. - Lewisboro Police frequently assist ambulance and other emergency personnel, but one incident early in May was particularly notable.

Police responded to a tree-removal accident in Waccabuc on Monday, May 11. A worker was cutting a large tree when it snapped, rolled downhill and pinned him beneath it. The worker reported severe head, chest and neck pain and was transported by the Lewisboro Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Westchester Medical Center for evaluation.

Police also responded to two fire-related incidents during the month.

On Saturday, May 2, officers were dispatched to a South Salem residence where an electric lawn mower had caught fire in the front yard. The South Salem Fire Department extinguished the blaze before police arrived. A Westchester County hazardous materials team removed the mower's lithium-ion batteries.

The following day, police assisted the Vista Fire Department with a report of an open burn at a residence in Pound Ridge. The homeowner had extinguished the fire before emergency personnel arrived. Officers advised the resident about the burn ban then in effect.

Later that day, police responded to a report of a black bear in a Waccabuc backyard. Officers helped the homeowner remove a bird feeder and attempted to scare the bear away. The animal moved closer to the house, ate birdseed that remained on the ground, and then retreated into nearby woods.

On Tuesday, May 5, a South Salem resident reported a fraud case at police headquarters. She said she had mailed three envelopes from the mailbox outside the Cross River Post Office the previous Saturday. One contained a check payable to a government agency. The resident later learned from her bank's fraud unit that the payee name had been altered and replaced with that of an individual. Bank officials advised police that a formal claim would be required to determine where the check had been deposited. The investigation remains ongoing.
