SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. - On Wednesday, May 20, Lewisboro Police assisted with two fires at opposite ends of town, the first occurring that afternoon at the Mercedes-Benz dealership in Goldens Bridge.
There, a tree fell onto power lines, causing a utility pole to catch fire. The responding officer first cleared all people from the area while the Goldens Bridge Fire Department notified New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) to cut power to the site. When the building subsequently caught fire, police helped employees evacuate and move to a safe area away from the fire and smoke.
That evening, police were called to a fire at a home in South Salem. The Vista and South Salem fire departments were on scene extinguishing the blaze, which originated in the home's gas-powered generator.
On Friday, May 22, an officer conducting surveillance from the parking lot of the Vista Fire Department spotted a pickup truck traveling south on Route 35 without a front license plate. In addition, the driver was not wearing a seat belt. The officer followed the truck with emergency lights activated and conducted a traffic stop.
An eJustice check revealed that the driver's Connecticut license had been suspended for failing to answer a summons. The driver contacted a licensed individual to remove the vehicle and was issued two moving violations and a desk appearance ticket.
On Saturday, May 30, police were dispatched to Route 123 in South Salem, where a tree was blocking the roadway and utility wires were down. A dispatcher notified NYSEG, which arrived shortly thereafter and removed the tree and wires from the roadway.
On Sunday, May 31, an officer on patrol in South Salem stopped a motorcyclist traveling north on Route 123 without a helmet. The operator produced a valid New York driver's license, but the motorcycle's Connecticut registration plates were found to be invalid, and the vehicle was both unregistered and uninsured. Sal's Towing impounded the motorcycle, and the operator was issued a ticket for operating an unregistered motor vehicle.
