CROSS RIVER, N.Y. - On June 6, at Suffern High School, Sloan Wasserman won the 3000 and 1500 meter Section One Championships.
“They were more training races than anything,” said the champ.
So while the gold medals had the John Jay Wolf aiming for a luster that was more in line with her accomplishments, the next level at Middletown High School proved to be more challenging.
“I did not do well,” Wasserman admitted. But even though her bar exists on a completely different plane, second place in the 3000 was still plenty for the John Jay force.
“Second place is fine,” she said.
Ten seconds off the winning pace, Wasserman was in range until the last two laps.
“I was not feeling like my regular self,” the junior revealed.
An injury and illness earlier in the year, she could only speculate but still made the best of the anomaly. “I powered through,” said Wasserman.
Off to the nationals, Wasserman didn’t drop her standards.
“I did ok,” she downplayed.
11th place at the University of Pennsylvania, she definitely took it all in.
“You earned your spot there,” she said. “It’s fun, you get your bag, and you compete.”
That said, she refused to play down the guidance that gave her the chance.
“I owe all my success to Coach Dey,” Wasserman assured.
The knowledge he brings dovetails to build an endurance level that always has the team in ship shape.
“He makes sure that on race day that you’re ready to go and do your best,” asserted Wasserman.
One year to go, she’s looking back to go forward.
“I know that race was not me. It’s not the athlete I am,” she concluded. “I didn’t really have any bad races all season, but unfortunately they came in the states. So I’m going to train really hard this summer and keep following and trusting Coach Dey. That means there’s no reason I shouldn’t be winning a bunch of stuff in cross country and track.”
