CROSS RIVER, N.Y. - On Monday, Oct. 20, John Jay hosted Byram Hills at the high school for a matchup between the Bobcats and the Wolves. From the outset, Byram Hills established dominance.

Byram jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first set and cruised to a 25-13 victory. Meghan McHugh briefly stopped the run with a kill from the right, but an errant serve gave the lead back. Later, McHugh combined with Euwen Chong on a diving back-row dig, finishing the point with another kill to spark a small rally.

Hellen Dollar also shone with her body control on a tight bump near the net, delivering a perfect center set to Julia Shepherd, who finished with a kill. Despite these bright spots, Byram’s defense and net play proved too strong, closing the set comfortably.

The second set mirrored the first, with Byram again jumping to a 6-0 lead. McHugh’s kill brought John Jay within 7-5, and Haley Hoskins kept the team in range with an ace at 10-7. But Byram quickly pulled away, using kills, blocks, and aces to reach a 14-8 lead. Emily Fulton contributed with a block, and an errant Byram spike brought the Bobcats within four points, but a 6-1 run by Byram sealed the set.

In the third set, the teams traded missed serves early, with Byram holding a narrow 4-3 lead. Three consecutive aces gave the Wolves separation, though John Jay fought back. Fulton’s kill and a Byram misstep brought the score to 8-5. Byram responded with a 17-8 lead.

John Jay tried one final rally: Euwen delivered a left-side kill, and McHugh made a diving back-row dig, narrowing the gap to 21-16. But Byram claimed four of the next five points to finish the match with a 3-0 sweep.
