John Jay girls soccer ends postseason run with loss to Pleasantville

CROSS RIVER, N.Y. - On Thursday, Oct. 30, John Jay traveled to Pleasantville for the semifinals, facing more than just a cold, rainy welcome. The Panthers jumped to a 2-0 lead, and the Wolves looked dead in the water. Not quite—the girls cut the lead in half, and with two minutes left in the game, a tying goal found the net. Unfortunately, the whistle said otherwise.

After Maye Vider’s corner kick bounced off Audrey Oestreicher’s head and the goalie went down on her clearing punch, the referee blew the whistle. What could have been a dramatic equalizer ended in a 2-1 John Jay defeat.

Still, the Wolves started aggressively, undeterred by the strong wind against them. With only 49 seconds elapsed, Kayla Cambareri intercepted a Pleasantville clear and delivered the ball to Oestreicher. The Panther defense converged, and the goalie made the save. John Jay kept the pressure on, with Mykel Papa sending a shot high and wide at 38:15.

Cambareri remained relentless, winning the sideline battle and delivering a chip shot that barely beat Oestreicher’s quick reaction at 37:15. Just 30 seconds later, Cambareri’s persistence earned a penalty kick, but Papa’s attempt connected with Cambareri’s head only for the ball to go straight to the goalie.

Pleasantville then countered. Two midfield passes set Samantha Shultz on a collision course with Abby Mattielo, resulting in a whistle and a turnover at 34:45. John Jay regained possession, moving the ball up to Mattielo, who led Vider down the sideline. Despite a determined run, Pleasantville defenders blocked the centering pass, leaving no shot on goal.

Later, a penalty shot after Oestreicher tripped Nehla Sauthoff was brilliantly saved by Brooke Epstein, keeping the scoreboard blank. Two minutes later, Emma Perry’s lead to Shultz ended with another blocked attempt, and a corner kick bounced harmlessly through.

Pleasantville capitalized on their next opportunity when John Jay was called for a tripping penalty against Mia Walker. The free kick reached Shultz, who headed it into the goal. At 22:05, Schultz threatened again, but Epstein blocked the shot into the side netting.

John Jay fought back. A lead pass to Mattielo resulted in several throw-ins, but Shultz maintained possession and set up Faith Brown, who slipped the ball inside the post for a 2-0 lead. Pleasantville’s defense held strong through intermission and for the next 21 minutes.

Finally, a long harmless kick to the John Jay defense set up a penalty kick for Papa. Although the Panther goalie deflected it, Vider was there to knock it in at 18:42, giving John Jay life.

John Jay continued pressing, forcing corner kicks and persistent attacks. Vider delivered a perfect cross to Oestreicher, whose header was punched away by the goalie—landing on all fours. Unfortunately, the referee’s whistle negated the goal off Lila Baker’s follow-up, and no further miracles came.

Despite the final score, the Wolves’ relentless effort and determination made them true winners on the field.
