KATONAH, N.Y. - The Harvey School’s football team capped off a marvelous Homecoming Day on Saturday, Oct. 19, with a convincing 46-26 victory over the Frederick Gunn School.
With both teams at 3-1 on the season and having never beaten the Highlanders from Washington, Connecticut, the Cavs were on a mission and struck first when senior nose tackle Luca Marano and junior linebacker Sean Jakobson broke through the line and harassed the Highlanders QB causing him to fumble and resulting in Marano recovering.
The Cavs turned the fumble into points in two plays after senior QB Jackson Saccomanno hit junior wide receiver Wyatt Bland with a 21-yard pass Saccomanno would run 6 yards for a TD. The 2-point point pass to Jakobson was successful and the Cavs were up early, 8-0.
Two minutes later, after Marano had caused another Highlanders’ fumble, Saccomanno’s 21-yard pass to Wyatt Bland and the QB’s 13-yard run put the ball in the red zone. Two plays later Saccomanno hit halfback Will Bland with a 6-yard TD pass and the Cavs led 14-0.
The Highlanders struck back four minutes into the second quarter on a 42-yard TD pass from the QB to his wide receiver and the 2-point conversion, cutting the lead to 14-8. But on the very next play from scrimmage, Saccomanno spotted senior fullback Max Hernandez open in the left flat, hit him with a pass. Hernandez, with his blazing speed, did the rest, outrunning his pursuers 63 yards for a spectacular TD. Saccomanno ran in the 2-point conversion and the Cavs were up 22-8.
The Highlanders answered right back with two quick scores, first, with a 57-yard TD pass and then a 50-yard QB run on a broken play to cut the deficit to 22-20 as the first half ended.
The second half started ominously for Harvey as the Highlanders took the kick and struck quickly, marching down the field and scoring on a 6-yard halfback run. Ths Cavs stopped the 2-point pass but now trailed for the first time, 26-22.
Despite losing the lead, the Cavs were undeterred and scored four minutes later on a 40-yard Saccomanno TD pass to Wyatt Bland who caught the ball over the middle and then sprinted to the end zone for the TD. Saccomanno hit wide receiver Dom Bonserio to cash in the 2-point conversion and the Cavs were back on top, 30-26.
