KATONAH, N.Y. - Harvey’s girls varsity basketball team put on an impressive display of defense and ball movement at home Thursday, Feb. 13, holding Wooster scoreless until halfway through the second quarter in an HVAL match-up that ended in a 57-11 Cavs victory.
Junior captain Peyton Forde got the Cavs on the board one minute into the first quarter and from there Harvey never looked back. The Cavs led 23-0 at the end of the opening quarter and were leading 35-0 at the 3:28 mark of the second quarter when the Wooster Generals finally scored their first two points. It was 39-4 at the half.
The second half continued to go Harvey’s way. Wooster could not muster much of an offense as Harvey defenders forced turnovers and Wooster shooters missed their mark more often than not. The Generals scored only four points in the third quarter and just three in the final quarter.
Harvey coach Mike Duigan, hoping the Cavs would put their blowout loss to Hamden Hall the day before behind them, was pleased to see his team come out of the gates strong against Wooster. “We came out with great defensive intensity to start the game, and that gave us confidence in all areas,” Coach Duignan said.
In addition to Forde who finished with a game-high 22 points, six other Cavs got into the scorebook, including Sydney Boothe with eight, Lainey Hanson of Yorktown Heights with seven, and Sarah Wolf with six. Senior center Maria Marcos Muñoz, who chipped in four points, was a force under the boards with 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Forde was outstanding on defense with 12 steals which denied Wooster scoring opportunities and boosted Harvey’s chances on offense.
Coach Duignan was delighted to see the Cavs get everyone involved in the offense. “It was a pleasure to see our unselfish passing and ball movement,” Coach Duignan said, adding, “We made the extra pass, and made strong cuts to the basket, which led to better and more high- percentage field goal attempts.”
With the win, the Cavs improve to 6-5 in the HVAL and 6-9 overall. They return to action Tuesday, Feb. 18 in a nonleague game against The Frederick Gunn School in Washington, Connecticut. Tip-off is 5 p.m.
