KATONAH, N.Y. - Harvey’s boys varsity basketball team will go into the winter break on a winning note after the Cavaliers racked up a 74-35 win at home Thursday, Dec. 19, against HVAL rival Williams.
The Cavs set the tone early when they opened the first half with a 9-0 run against the visiting Blues. The points were spread out among four Cavs with junior guard Cameron Powell-Spruils getting five of the nine on a two-pointer and a trey. With the Cavs leading 18-6 at the 9:43 mark, they went on to score eight unanswered points to go up 26-6. Williams had a short spurt of offense near the end of the first half, but Harvey held a 34-16 lead by halftime.
The second half started with senior point guard Jonah Kass of Katonah scoring 14 of his team's first 20 points. Along with Kass, Powell-Spruils, junior guard Piotr Pawel Pajewski, and senior guard Daniel Bussey all contributed baskets to send the Cavs on a 13-0 run and put them up 52-22. Harvey went on to outscore the Blues by 11 in the remaining minutes to seal the victory.
Kass finished with 25 points. Powell-Spruils and freshman guard Gavin Botoff each hit double figures with 11 points apiece.
Harvey head coach Denis Arnautovic called the victory against the Cavs’ HVAL opponent “a good first league win.” He added, “Great things happen when the boys play as a unit.” Coach Arnautovic was particularly pleased with the way the Cavs managed the game. “The team utilized pace of play to its fullest — speeding up when the opportunity came about for a fast break and slowing it down to run an organized offense when the situation called for it,” Coach Arnautovic said.
A good start and consistent play allowed the Cavs to show off the depth of their roster. Harvey’s scoring was spread out among nine players.
Harvey, now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the HVAL, will return to action after the winter break when HVAL rival Christian Heritage School of Trumbull, Connecticut, visits.
