Harckham Defeats Arena in 40th Senate District

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - Democratic incumbent Pete Harckham has once again turned away the challenge from Republican Gina Arena in the 40th Senate District.

Sen. Harckham received 84,789 votes to Arena’s tally of 74,299, according to unofficial results from the New York State Board of Elections.

Arena led the vote totals from the Putnam and Rockland County portion of the district, but an overwhelming show of support from Westchester powered Harckham to another term.

“The support I have received during this campaign has been phenomenal, and I truly appreciate all of the voters in Senate District 40 for making their voices heard in this important election,” said Sen. Harckham. “I am guided by the confidence and trust that residents place in my public service, and will continue to be engaged in the hard work necessary to keep moving New York forward.”

“This victory is a validation for how hard our team works for the residents in this district,” Harckham added. “I thank the hundreds of volunteers and donors who made this victory a reality.”

Harckham was elected to the New York State Senate in 2018 and re-elected in 2020 and 2022.

Arena would concede on Wednesday morning.

“I am so grateful to the hundreds of volunteers who gave their all to my campaign over the past six months. We went to bed on Election Night with a lead, but it appears to have slipped away in the early morning hours," said Arena. “The issues we ran on were real and pressing: New Yorkers are financially strapped and desperately need relief. Meanwhile, the Sanctuary State crisis is costing those same New Yorkers billions of dollars annually that we need for our own citizens.  And with the unfortunate passage of Prop 1, girls-only sports may soon be a thing of the past in this state. I’m so proud of the defense of girls that we demonstrated. I congratulate Mr. Harckham on his reelection, and remain passionately opposed to his progressive agenda.”

Harckham was reelected alongside fellow Democratic Assemblymembers Chris Burdick and Dana Levenberg.
