SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. - An 18-year-old man from Connecticut was tragically killed in a heavy machinery accident in South Salem earlier this week.

At 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, State Troopers and officers from the Lewisboro Police Department were called to a private residence after receiving a 911 call regarding an unresponsive individual.

Authorities arrived at the private residence and located Brandon Q. Gmelin of Ridgefield and immediately began life-saving procedures.

Gmelin was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation indicated that Gmelin had been moving a log splitter that had been delivered at the site for scheduled landscaping work. While attempting the move the apparatus, the splitter rolled down a slope and struck him, resulting in fatal injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, but preliminary reports show that police do not suspect foul play.
