SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. - Motor vehicle accidents and traffic infractions were less prominent on the Lewisboro Police blotter during the first half of September. Nonetheless, police responded to six accidents during the period as well as several serious traffic infractions.
An accident with property damage took place Tuesday, September 2, in South Salem. A driver on Old Church Lane attempted to pass a parked, unattended Highway Department dump truck, and hit the truck’s sideview mirror. The driver refused medical attention, and an accident report was filed.
An accident involving a school bus and a car took place in Goldens Bridge on Sept. 4. The transportation supervisor was on scene with the bus driver when police arrived. The bus driver reported that he had missed a student’s pickup spot and, when attempting to back up, hit the front bumper of a car traveling closely behind him.
There was no damage to the bus and the sole damage to the car was a front bumper cap that had fallen off. It was snapped back into place. The car’s driver was advised that if he spotted any additional damage, he could file an accident report.
An accident involving injury took place in Cross River on Sept. 8. While traveling north on North Salem Road, a driver became distracted, left the roadway, and struck a signpost and Belgian block curbing. The driver subsequently returned to the roadway and stopped in the northbound lane.
South Salem was the scene of another accident on Sept. 9. A driver backing into a driveway reported being hit a second driver. He stated that the second driver’s front bumper hit the first vehicle’s passenger side door.
The driver of the second vehicle had a different version of the events. She stated that she had stopped when she saw the first vehicle backing into the driveway and began to back up to get out of the way. Instead, she reported, the first vehicle ran into her driver’s side front bumper with his side door. No injuries were reported and neither vehicle had to be towed.
Police responded on Sept. 11 to an accident involving vehicle damage at a Goldens Bridge shopping center. Driver no. 1 reported sitting in his vehicle while it was parked at the center. Driver no. 2 then backed out of the adjacent space, striking the rear passenger quarter panel of driver the first vehicle. Neither driver reported injuries.
Police responded to an accident involving property damage on Wednesday, September 17. The accident took place in a Cross River parking lot. The operator of a tractor-trailer had parked at a store to complete a delivery. While getting ready to depart, a white van backed into the driver side of his trailer while exiting a parking stall. There was no damage to the tractor-trailer but there was damage to the van.
The van’s driver did not want to make an accident report and left the scene. The tractor-trailer driver nonetheless wanted to file an incident report should the van’s driver return in the future to make a report and a claim to police.
Impoundments and Infractions
On September 3, police stopped a vehicle traveling east on Route 35 in Cross River that had an expired registration. The driver provided the officer with his license and registration, but said the vehicle was uninsured. A check with eJustice revealed both his license and registration to be suspended.
The driver received six traffic tickets (aggravated unlicensed operator in the third degree, unlicensed operation, operation while registration suspended/revoked, unregistered motor vehicle, uninspected motor vehicle, and operating without insurance). He also received a court-appearance ticket.
An impoundment of a dump truck also took place on Sept. 3 in South Salem. This impoundment happened after police conducted a commercial vehicle inspection. Police took the vehicle out of service because of several violations.
Still another impoundment took place on September 5 in South Salem, where police stopped a driver for traveling at high rate of speed. The driver provided an international novelty ID with his name, but a check of DMV records turned up no valid driver’s license and the car’s Vermont registration belonged on another vehicle. The driver said he had no car insurance.
The driver received five tickets, for excessive speed, for driving without a license, for driving an unregistered vehicle, for driving an uninsured vehicle, and for improper plates. Sal’s Towing impounded the vehicle.
Other incidents
Police responded to a disabled car on the first day of the month in Goldens Bridge. In turning from Route 22 onto Route 35, the driver reported his car stopped running and all the interior dash lights came on. Police spotted a buildup of grains of sugar or salt near the gas tank’s opening. The driver’s female passenger said an ex-boyfriend and father of her child had been stalking her.
She also told police that this harassment had escalated since she had begun dating the disabled car’s driver. She had reported a previous such incident to Lewisboro Police. The vehicle was then towed to a dealership in Mount Kisco.
A foreclosed house in Katonah was the subject of a criminal-mischief complaint filed by a contractor on Wednesday, September 3. The onsite subcontractor reported significant malicious damage, including more than a dozen broken windows, 800 square feet of damaged drywall, and 100 feet of stolen copper piping. The property’s owner aimed to file an insurance claim about the incident but first had to file a police report.
An auto shop in Goldens Bridge filed a larceny report on Wednesday, Sept. 10. The owner reported that between August 26 and 28, he noticed two plumbing relief valves were missing from shop. The valves had been removed for the system to be pressure tested and when workers went to reinstall them, they were missing. The total value for those valves was $5,791.
