KATONAH, N.Y. - A scary incident on the ice had a happy ending thanks to the quick thinking of the Bedford Police Department and other local first responders.
Just after 11 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 20, the Bedford Police Department received several 911 calls regarding an unconscious male on the ice at a hockey event at the rink at The Harvey School in Katonah.
Officer DeAlto was first on the scene, determining that they had gone into cardiac arrest and was no longer breathing. DeAlto began CPR and used a defibrillator to administer a shock.
Officers Leone and Sagliano and Detective Whalen assisted at the scene while EMS personnel responded. The officers were then able to determine that the individual had regained his pulse but still needed ventilations.
Personnel from the Katonah Fire Department, Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and Westchester EMS assumed primary care and transported the victim to Northern Westchester Hospital.
It was later reported that the patient was discharged several days later and is recovering.
The Bedford Police Department issued the following statement via their Facebook page:
“Not only is hockey a demanding team sport, so are emergencies. Through the immediate notification to 911 by the teammates, the quick response and care provided by responding Bedford PD officers and the subsequent advanced care by arriving EMS and staff at Northern Westchester Hospital this story has a happy ending as we enter 2025.”
