The Putnam Northern Westchester Women’s Resource Center (PNWWRC) is raising money to help victims of domestic violence build safer lives.
Its annual Walk to End Domestic Violence is set for Sunday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park, 201 Gipsy Trail Road, in Carmel.
The nonprofit agency provides counseling, 24/7 shelter, advocacy, case management, support groups, and educational and referral services. Its mission is to create a safe, supportive environment that eliminates violence against women, children and men, and promotes gender equality. All services are free and confidential.
According to an August 2025 press release from the agency, domestic violence affects “too many people in our communities.” The release cited a report stating that one in four women and one in 10 men have experienced sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime.
A 2023 report by New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli found an 8.7 percent increase in domestic violence victims in New York compared to 2019.
The release said, in 2024, New York reported the highest demand for domestic violence services in the nation, according to one survey. During a single 24-hour period, participating programs in the state assisted nearly 8,900 victims, while more than 1,700 requests for help went unmet due to a lack of resources.
These figures underscore the urgent need for increased funding and services statewide, the agency said.
PNWWRC Executive Director Piaget Solpiaget said the agency supports more than 1,500 women, children and men in crisis annually.
“No one seeking safety from domestic violence or sexual abuse is ever turned away because they can’t afford the help they need,” he said in the release. “Every dollar raised during this year’s walk means hope for families struggling to overcome the effects of domestic violence. If you haven’t had the opportunity to attend our event, I urge you to buy a ticket or become a sponsor and show your support for the important work that we do.”
This year’s walk honors the Cold Spring Lions Club, Harvey Family Foundation, and Somers Women's Club for their longstanding contributions and support, which have helped foster healing for victims of domestic violence.
Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Sponsorship opportunities are available by calling 845-628-9284 or visiting pnwwrc.org
