SOMERS, N.Y. - The Somers Volunteer Fire Department was on the move heading toward the new year, responding to 20 calls for service amid winter weather and a series of emergencies over a two-day period.
During Friday’s snowstorm, members staffed local firehouses to ensure rapid response times as conditions deteriorated. Activity picked up early Saturday morning with a plow truck fire, followed by multiple fire and emergency medical calls throughout the day, as well as a false alarm at Somers Commons on Route 6.
The most significant incident occurred at 4:21 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, when the SVFD was dispatched to the Heritage Hills Shopping Center for a fully involved plow truck fire. Upon arrival, crews confirmed the blaze and quickly brought it under control. No injuries were reported. Firefighters remained on scene for approximately an hour and a half before returning to service.
Units responding to the incident included command vehicles Car 2441, 2442, 2443 and 2444, along with Engines 180 and 186.
Department officials credited the quick response and coordination of their volunteers for the successful outcome and reiterated that the Somers Volunteer Fire Department is always seeking new members and mutual aid volunteers to help support the community.
