MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. - “This is strictly me wanting to do something in the genre that I enjoy reading,” explains author Karl Rosenfeld. “I can't get enough of this stuff for some reason.”
The Philadelphia-based scribe recently released his debut novel, “The List,” an intense crime thriller that draws on some local inspiration.
The book tells the story of Michael McLaughlin, a former NYPD detective who specialized in serial murders. Burned out from the stress, he moves north and joins the police force in Mount Kisco hoping for a fresh start.
When a pair of young women are found murdered, he is thrown headlong into the search for the killer in a case filled with wild turns leading to a gripping twist ending.
The decision to set the novel in Mount Kisco came from a bit of familial inspiration.
“My daughter and son in law moved from Brooklyn to Chappaqua many years ago to raise their two daughters,” Rosenfeld continues. “Because of that, I came to know both Chappaqua and Mount Kisco. I found both towns charming and delightful.”
While drawing inspiration from films like “Dirty Harry” and “Silence of the Lambs,” Rosenfeld also crafted the fictionalized version of Mount Kisco to help develop a cast of well-rounded characters.
As he hunts for the killer, McLaughlin also develops an unexpected romance with the mayor, and receives assistance from a young law student.
Rosenfeld is a retired orthopedist who formerly enjoyed a long career at several Pennsylvania healthcare facilities including Main Line Health Paoli Hospital and Phoenixville Hospital. He has two adult children, and has been married to his life Helaine for 57 years.
Looking to the future, Rosenfeld is already penning a followup to “The List.”
“I’m already knee-deep in writing the sequel,” he concludes.
“The List” is currently available for purchase on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and iTunes.
