Nathan Sloan, age 100, passed away on June 23, 2025, at the NYS Veterans Home in Montrose, NY.
Remembered as an extraordinary father, uncle, and teacher, Nathan was an iconoclast who carved his own path through life. Born in Manhattan on November 4, 1924, as Nathan Schlossberg, he changed his last name to Sloan following military service in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war he attended New York University, where he met his wife Harriet and formed a circle of lifelong friends.
Nathan began his professional journey in the business world but soon discovered his true calling in education. He started in Yonkers before moving on to Scarsdale, where he was a beloved junior high school science teacher for more than three decades. Nathan inspired generations of students not only through the subject matter he taught, but by encouraging them to live their best lives. He had an enduring fascination with reptiles, becoming a founding member and first president of the NY Herpetological Society (now defunct). After retiring in the mid-1980s, Nathan resided at Heritage Hills in Somers, pursuing his passions -- for tennis, dancing, and sculpture -- continuing to create and connect well into his later years.
Predeceased by his wife, Harriet, Nathan is survived by his daughter Karen Sloan and daughter-in-law Karen Connelly; nieces Mindy, Shari, and Stacy; and countless former students who remember him fondly both inside and outside the classroom.
May his memory be a blessing.
