Work continues on closed Old Crompond Road bridge

Officials target December for reopening

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y.—Work to replace the 106-year-old bridge on Old Crompond Road between Bound Brook Lane and Hunterbrook Road will continue through the end of the year with the goal of reopening the crossing.

The Town of Yorktown said in an Oct. 1 press release that it received permission from the state Department of Environmental Conservation to continue the work. For the past two years, environmental regulations protecting stream trout and other wildlife limited construction to four months a year.

“We’ve been struggling to get this bridge done. There are a lot of moving parts that have to happen, but we ran out of time according to the DEC,” Supervisor Ed Lachterman said in the release.

The town, with help from Assemblyman Matt Slater, negotiated with DEC to secure more time to complete the bridge construction, which was required after the structure was damaged in a severe storm back in 2023.

After officials discovered the damage on the two-lane bridge, they restricted traffic to one lane before closing the bridge when replacement work began last year. Officials said they have heard residents’ concerns and are working to address them.

“I’m very happy to facilitate the extension with the DEC,” Slater said, and added the regional office was "receptive" and "willing to work with the town" to grant the extension.

Highway Superintendent Dave Paganelli said the target for completion is the first week of December.

“That’s very crucial because the detour on White Hill Road is not safe during the winter,” he said.

In the coming months, a crane will install the prefabricated modular bridge that will serve as the replacement.
